This just in:  LONDON, May 8 (UPI) -- Bread makers in France are no longer producing a proper crust on their baguettes, says an American college professor and expert on French bread.  Steven Kaplan of New York's Cornell University says after spending a lifetime studying and eating French bread he has witnessed the slow death of the crust, The Times of London reported Friday.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A cow escaped death when it fled a New York City slaughterhouse Wednesday, running through the streets before being corralled by mounted police.  The escape appears to have earned the cow a free pass -- it will be turned over to an animal care agency rather then sent back to the slaughterhouse in the New York City borough of Queens, police said.

The left only wants to know if it was subjected to harsh interrogation.

DAYTON, Ohio, May 7 (UPI) -- Police in Ohio said a man suspected of stealing from a clothing store stopped to fill out a job application before leaving the scene.  Investigators said Stanley Wright, 49, concealed T-shirts and pants from Deveroes in Dayton, Ohio, under his shirt and the waistline of his pants and filled out a job application at the store's checkout counter before attempting to leave with the items, the Dayton Daily News reported Thursday.

These Americans, so obsessed with work.

Cultural news:   Detroit (WWJ) -- Mr. Song Millinery on Woodward Avenue in Detroit has struck a sour note with Aretha Franklin. It was her inaugural hat that caused a flood of orders from around the world. And now, the Queen of Soul wants royal treatment from store owner Luke Song for wearing it.  "I think that I should be getting big time royalties from him. That's what I think," said Franklin in an interview with WWJ's Vickie Thomas at Sunday's NAACP Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner.

Aretha, it's a store, in embattled Detroit.  Give 'em a break.
